Domain holder verification
You have received an e-mail from DENIC
What does this e-mail mean?
DENIC has checked the registrant details on file for your domain. These are currently incomplete or cannot be verified. To ensure your domain remains online, the details must be verified via your provider.
Important: Once your domain is in the verification process, it is not sufficient simply to view or amend your details. An active verification process with supporting evidence must be carried out using one of the methods listed below, and your provider must submit the result to DENIC. Only then is the verification process considered complete.
First things first: check your e-mails
In the vast majority of cases, your provider will have already asked you to verify your details around 24 days ago. This earlier email from your provider contains the specific instructions for your procedure — the DENIC e-mail is merely an additional reminder shortly before the deadline expires.
Depending on the circumstances, the procedure may vary — in simple cases, for example,
- clicking a confirmation link or
- entering a code (for e-mail verification only) sent to you by your provider is sufficient.
In most cases, however, submission of documents or an identity verification process (e.g. PostIdent, Video-Ident) is required. Your provider will inform you which process applies to your case.
If your data have changed in the meantime: The new details must also be supported by proof. Simply correcting them in your customer account is not sufficient.
Search your inbox and spam folder for:
- E-mails from your provider (the name and e-mail address are listed in the DENIC e-mail under “Your point of contact”)
- Keywords such as “verification”, “owner details”, “NIS 2” or “BSI Act”
If you find the provider’s e-mail: Follow the instructions provided. This is the quickest way to keep your domain online.
If you can't find your provider's e-mail: three steps
Identify your provider
| Where to look | What you'll find there |
Old bills | The party invoicing you for the domain is your direct contractual partner — start here |
DENIC | Section ‘Your point of contact’ with the DENIC member’s name, address, telephone number and e-mail address |
Web whois | webwhois.denic.de → Enter domain → “Domain management information” |
Are you unfamiliar with the company mentioned in the DENIC e-mail?
It is possible that you purchased your domain through a reseller — that is, through a hosting or web agency provider who is themselves a customer of a DENIC member. In this case, neither the DENIC e-mail nor the webwhois service will show your direct contractual partner, but rather the DENIC member at the end of the chain.
In this case, please contact the provider from whom you actually purchased your domain first — that is, the one who is invoicing you for the domain. Your reseller will forward the verification request through the contractual chain to the DENIC member. When contacting them, please mention the member named in the DENIC e-mail so that your reseller can identify the request.
Contact your provider
Please contact your provider and provide the following details:
- Your domain (e.g. my-domain.de)
- Your customer or contract number with the provider (if available)
- The following note: “I have received a DENIC request for owner data verification and would like to carry out the verification now.”
E-mail template to copy:
Subject: Holder data verification for the domain [my-domain.de]
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have received a request from DENIC to verify the holder details for my domain [my-domain.de] by [date from DENIC e-mail]. Please let me know which procedure you offer and what documents you require.
Kind regards
[Your name]
Carry out the procedure and wait for confirmation
Your provider will tell you which method they offer — depending on the circumstances, an e-mail confirmation, a code, an address confirmation by post, or an identification procedure such as PostIdent or Video-Ident may suffice.
A simple visual check or correction of the data is not sufficient — active verification via one of the permitted methods must be provided. Once verification has been successfully completed, your provider will forward the confirmation to DENIC. You do not need to send anything to DENIC yourself.
Your deadline at a glance
- Today — You have received the e-mail from DENIC.
- In 5 days — The deadline expires. Verification must be completed with your provider by then.
- The day after the deadline — If verification has not been carried out, your domain will be taken offline.
- Up to 83 days thereafter — You can still reactivate your domain during this period by completing the verification process via your provider.
- After the 83 days have elapsed — The domain contract will be terminated and the domain permanently deleted.
The binding deadline is the specific date stated in your DENIC e-mail. Please ensure you adhere to this date.
Common stumbling blocks
If your provider does not respond within two working days, please contact them by telephone. In the case of reseller arrangements, you can alternatively contact the DENIC member named in the e-mail directly — they will refer you to the correct point in the chain. DENIC itself cannot carry out the verification on their behalf — not even in urgent cases.
