Press Release | 03.04.2000

Two Million Domain Names end with .de

The number of domains with the suffix ".de" continues to double every six months. One year ago 500,000 domains were registered and at the beginning of October 1999 this number had increased to one million. Now, on 3 April 2000, DENIC eG, the central German registry, registrated domain #2,000,000.

Thus the exponential growth of domain names continues. DENIC eG currently registers a new domain every 10 seconds and performs several thousand updates of existing domains' data per day. For reasons of unambiguousness every domain name can only be registered once. DENIC eG expects that the registration boom will continue for the rest of the year, so that by the end of 2000 there will be 3.5 million domains. The .de-domain zone is the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world, trailing only the United States.
