As attractive but a geographical and geological counterpoint is found at "halligen.de". The tiny Halligs, ten marsh islands at mean sea level in the middle of the North Sea, are bizarrely exposed to the full broad force of violent storms, gales and flooding from the mountain-high waves of the sea. "Floating dreams" was the name, the German 19th-century author Theodor Fontane once called the remaining sandy uplands of the wide marshland. The five largest, populated Hallig islands are designated as a transition area of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea national park in the north of Germany. The inhabitants of the Halligen biosphere reserve live on artificially erected mounds, the so-called wharfs. These are the only protection they have against the tides and storms of the North Sea. The land of Schleswig-Holstein strongly supports the preservation of the Halligs and takes extensive measures to this end, last but not least because they serve as a natural breakwater for the mainland. Moreover, they are essential for stabilising the sensible mudflats. Since 2003, the Hallig islands are presented by the "halligen.de" domain. "Our website is a very important information channel for all those who want to get an insight into the world of the Halligs and learn about the people who live there. It provides information on the islands' nature with its particular needs for protection as well as on its history and presents current development projects," describes Sabine Müller, manageress of the association Halliggemeinschaft Biosphäre.

.de domains are registered nationwide in all parts of Germany. The latest DENIC regional domain statistics now map their precise geographic distribution in 2015. As of 31 December 2015, about 14.8 million .de domains were registered in 402 cities and districts of Germany. Adding to these numbers are more than 1.1 domains of holders whose place of residence is abroad. In total, more than 16 million .de domains were registered at the end of 2015. Domain development was moderate and sustained the West-East divide of regional .de domain distribution.
