The TRANSIT Procedure

With TRANSIT, DENIC has an efficient and fast procedure in place that enables the domain holder to take quick and easy action to return their domain to regular domain administration by a provider or to simply delete the domain if they do not want to use it anymore.

Important! Please note:

If you have received a TRANSIT letter that is dated BEFORE 1 November 2020, a former version of the TRANSIT procedure applies in your case. For the details, please refer to the letter. It provides all the information you need and explains the steps you must take.

The TRANSIT procedure shall protect the domain holder from unintended loss of a domain. The service is provided for a limited period only. The domain holder can transfer administration of their domain to another provider and thus ensure that they can continue to use their domain, or they can delete the domain and thus release it for new registration by a third party. Both options can easily be performed via the online portal transit.denic.de.

The Essentials at a Glance

  • The domain administration within the framework of the TRANSIT procedure is provided by DENICdirect and is chargeable.
  • DENIC sends the domain holder a demand for payment for the first year of domain administration.
  • The domain holder can make use of an accommodation DENIC offers them: They can either select another provider within the defined period or they can request the deletion of the domain.
  • If the domain holder makes use of the accommodation, no costs will be charged by DENIC for the TRANSIT procedure.
  • If the domain holder does not react within the defined period, the domain contract will be terminated without notice and, as a result, DENIC will delete the domain.

If a provider ends the administration of a domain, it will be handed over to the direct administration of the DENIC eG, the central registry for all domains under the country code .de. This means, the domain then goes through the TRANSIT procedure, which protects the domain and ensures that it cannot simply be deleted and consequently newly registered by a third party. The domain administration is provided by DENICdirect and is chargeable.

As long as a domain is administered by a provider, this provider‘s prices apply for the administration of the domain and the obligation for the domain holder to pay the domain charges to DENIC is suspended. If however, the DENIC member ends their administration of the domain, the obligation to pay is reactivated and the domain holder must pay the domain charges directly to DENIC according to the DENIC price list that is in effect at that time. This rule is defined in Section 4 of the DENIC Domain Terms and Conditions. The domain holder will receive a demand for payment for the first year of domain management by DENICdirect. The charge levied is in accordance with the DENIC Price List. The DENICdirect service does not provide Internet services such as an e-mail account or web space.

Offer of Accommodation

Should the domain holder decide against having their domain administered by the service DENICdirect, DENIC offers the following accommodation:

The demand for payment is cancelled if the domain holder makes use of one of the following two options within the defined period.

  1. Provider transfer: By means of a provider transfer password (AuthInfo) the domain holder brings about the transfer of their domain to a provider of their choice.
  2. Deletion: With the deletion of the domain the domain holder loses their position as holder and the domain becomes available for registration by a third party.

Via our website transit.denic.de a a domain holder can submit a deletion request online or generate their individual provider transfer password (AuthInfo). Subsequently, this password must be communicated to the future provider, so that they can bring the domain transfer to a close. To choose a provider, a domain holder can refer to our list of DENIC members.

Impending Termination of Contract

If the domain holder does not react within the defined period, i.e. if

  • payment in full has not been made, or
  • no provider transfer has taken place, or
  • the domain has not been deleted,

DENIC will terminate the domain contract without notice and delete the domain. The legal basis for this is Section 7 (2) (k) of the DENIC Terms and Conditions. Therefore, it is essential that the domain holder reacts to the TRANSIT letter in order to avoid an unintended termination of the domain contract.
