Registering an ENUM Domain

If you wish to register an ENUM domain, please proceed as follows:

1. Request one of the providers included in DENIC’s list of members offering ENUM domains to handle your registration. If you already have a provider who is not on our list, this provider can still perform domain registrations by working together with one of our members. The easiest thing to do is speak to your provider directly. The name service, i. e. setting up the communication entries and other services, may either be requested from the DENIC member or any other provider, or you can do those jobs yourself. Registration as an ENUM domain is only possible for those domains that correspond to geographic telephone numbers (all numbers with German area dialling codes), mobile wireless numbers within the (0)15, (0)16 and (0)17 ranges, national numbers ((0)32), national free-phone (toll-free) numbers ((0)800), personal telephone numbers ((0)700) or service numbers ((0)18).

Before you place your domain registration request, you should be familiar with the ENUM Domain Guidelines. Among other things, these guidelines determine what rules must be observed for ENUM domains under .9.4.e164.arpa and what jobs have to be done by the various contacts, such as Admin-C, Tech-C and Zone-C. A domain contract with DENIC can only be concluded if all the conditions of the Guidelines have been fulfilled. The provisions applicable to this contract are summarized in the ENUM Domain Terms and Conditions. These describe and explain the rights and duties of domain holders and DENIC.

2. In order to register an ENUM domain, you must be the assignee, i. e. the legitimate holder of the corresponding E 164 number (telephone number), and your data must be accurate and complete. The correctness of the data must be verified at regular intervals by way of validation.

3. In case of changes to the domain data or if you are no longer the assignee (legitimate holder) of the telephone number, you should contact your DENIC member immediately and request it to inform DENIC about the change. With the registration of your domain, you as its holder have undertaken to keep the domain data always correct and up to date. Inaccurate data will give DENIC the right to terminate the domain registration contract. Moreover, problems may arise in revalidation. Revalidation is the procedure in which the identity of the domain holder and the assignee of the corresponding telephone number is checked after one year. If this process is not successful, the ENUM domain will not be renewed and will thus be deleted. It is therefore in your own interest to inform your provider without delay about any changes that may occur.

Updating Data of an ENUM Domain

We only accept UPDATE requests for domain or personal data from the DENIC member administering the domain at the time. This policy has several advantages:

  • The data is collected and coordinated at a single location.
  • The data is protected against manipulation and misuse by third parties since the member will always verify the authorization of the party requesting the data update.
  • The technical implications, e. g. for changes in the name server data (updates on the secondary name servers etc.), are processed without the domain holder needing to do anything.
  • Your provider possesses automatic tools for changing the data sets, i.e. the UPDATE does not require any manual intervention by DENIC and may thus be carried out within a very short time.
