Registering a .de domain

To register a .de domain, please proceed as follows:

1. Find out whether the domain you wish to register is still available. To do so, you can either use our whois domain query service or the query function offered by most providers. Before you place your domain registration request, you should be familiar with the Domain Guidelines. Among other things, these guidelines contain the rules to be respected by domains under .de and describe the functions of the various contacts, such as Admin-C, Tech-C and Zone-C. A Domain Contract with DENIC can only be concluded if all the conditions laid down there have been fulfilled. The provisions applicable to this contract are summarized in the Domain Terms and Conditions. These describe and explain the rights and duties of domain holders and DENIC. DENIC's price list, too, forms part of the contract.

2. Choose a provider to handle your registration request. Usually, providers offer domain registration as part of a package, along with other Internet services. In addition, they ensure the technical accessibility of your domain. These service packages can vary between providers, and so can their prices. As an alternative to having your domain registration handled by a provider, you may register your domain via our Direct Services Department.

3. Place the order for registration of the domain with the provider of your choice. Whichever provider you may have chosen, the actual process of registering your domain will always be carried out by DENIC and the corresponding contract terms will apply.

Updating Domain Data

With the registration of your domain, you as its holder have undertaken to keep the domain data always correct and up to date. Inaccurate data entitles DENIC to terminate the domain registration contract. It is therefore in your own interest to inform your provider without delay about any changes that may occur.

We only accept UPDATE requests for domain or personal data from the DENIC member administering the domain at the time. This policy has several advantages:

  • The data is collected and coordinated at a single location.
  • The data is protected against manipulation and misuse by third parties.
  • The technical implications, for instance for changes in the name server data (updates on the secondary name servers, etc.), are processed without the domain holder needing to do anything.
  • Your provider possesses automatic tools for changing the data sets, i.e. the UPDATE does not require any manual intervention by DENIC.

Nevertheless, you should use our whois query function after every update to make sure that the data is correct.
