Sponsoring the First Root Name Server in Germany
Already since 2004 has DENIC been involved in the operation of an instance of the K-root server in Frankfurt. The instanced server is run in collaboration with the operator of the DE-CIX hub, the Internet association eco. In this way, DENIC wants to support the efforts to achieve a better geographic distribution of DNS root servers around the world. The Frankfurt instance as well as the instances in London and Amsterdam are managed by RIPE NCC. DENIC is responsible for the network access and sponsors the required hardware, while eco places at disposal the premises and ensures an on-site-service all around the clock.
DENIC sees its commitment as another step towards further expanding the service for the German Internet Community and simultaneously as a contribution to ensuring stability of the Internet as a whole.
The host in Frankfurt is the first root server located directly in Germany. As a consequence, the response times to DNS queries decrease for all German Internet users connected directly to the DE-CIX hub. Moreover, the German Internet would work even in case of long-time isolation, since the DNS information is available at a central point within the German Internet.
